Seeing Student Similarities Halfway Around the World

In reflecting on the time I spent this summer in Skopje, Macedonia, I am flooded with fond memories. From the moment that I got off of the plane in Macedonia, I was welcomed with open arms by my host teacher, Maja B. She has since transferred to a different school, but when I visited she worked as an English teacher, and part-time assistant principal at a vocational high school. Being able to shadow her at school was such a wonderful experience. Although the students were not doing typical coursework because of their preparation for the national standardized test, I was […]

A Memorable Journey to Macedonia by Violetta (Bektesh) Armour

Call it Serendipity or fate but whatever it is, sometimes life has a way of coming full circle in a wonderful way. My recent trip to Macedonia and search for my ancestors was successful thanks to many chance encounters and to helpful people along the way. And Tempe Sister Cities played a big role in it all. I guess my story really begins over 90 years ago. My paternal grandparents, Spiro and Vaska Bektesh with their three sons, Peter, Dimitre and Milan (my father) immigrated to America from Prilep, Macedonia in 1921.

TSC Hosts Reception For President Gjorge Ivanov of the Republic of Macedonia

Tempe Sister Cities hosted a reception to honor President Gjorge Ivanov of the Republic of Macedonia on April 25, 2013. This was the first time Tempe Sister Cities has hosted a reception for a president of a country. It was a beautiful event held at the Hackett House. President Ivanov was impressed with the different displays in each room of Hackett House, representing the many cities that have twinned with Tempe. Later President Ivanov was presented with a cowboy hat by Dick Neuheisel who promised him a horse on his next visit.

Student Delegates Return with Stories to Tell :A blog by Sheridan Rosner, Delegate to Skopje

I finally have time to begin my blog! The four of us (Natalie, Sean, David, and I) arrived on Sunday afternoon. We each left with our families and I finally met Sashka and her parents. She lives in a house about ten minutes from the center of the city by bus. Her mother made chicken and potatoes for lunch, saying she would start making more traditional foods the next day. We began the meal with a toast, with the operative word being “na zdravye,” meaning “cheers,” but you also say that when you finish a meal. I have used that […]
