Seeing Student Similarities Halfway Around the World
In reflecting on the time I spent this summer in Skopje, Macedonia, I am flooded with fond memories. From the moment that I got off of the plane in Macedonia, I was welcomed with open arms by my host teacher, Maja B. She has since transferred to a different school, but when I visited she worked as an English teacher, and part-time assistant principal at a vocational high school. Being able to shadow her at school was such a wonderful experience. Although the students were not doing typical coursework because of their preparation for the national standardized test, I was […]
Tales from Beaulieu sur Mer, France
How many people can say they’ve been snorkeling in the south of France? Not many! But I’m one of the few who has been lucky enough to have this experience, and it happened to me this past summer in Beaulieu sur Mer, France. One humid morning in France I woke up at 5 am to be driven to the top of Eze Village to carpool for 3 hours to Port-Cros, an island in the Mediterranean, where Amanda, TJ, Avery, our French siblings and I boarded a boat to get to the island where we would spend the day snorkeling in […]
Domspatzen German Boys Choir Visits Grand Canyon 2014
One of Tempe’s nine sister cities is Regensburg, Germany, at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers in Bavaria. And one of the prides of Regensburg—along with having Tempe, Ariz., for a sister city—is the Regensburger Domspatzen, the boys choir of Regensburg Cathedral. The boys of the Domspatzen could perhaps be considered nephews of Tempe, and in April their American relatives got to babysit them for a few eventful days—and let them sing for their keep. One of the oldest and most respected boys choirs in Europe, the Domspatzen (“Cathedral sparrows”) traces its lineage back to 975 A.D.
Tempe Educators in New Zealand Summer 2013
It truly is a joy to relive once again this past summer and fall. Jill Osborne, Katy McGill, and I (Mary Bosen) were honored to travel to beautiful Lower Hutt, New Zealand as the Teacher’s Exchange Delegates for 2013. Katy was hosted by a delightful young teacher couple, Kelly and Rihania Chadwick, both 4/5grade teachers.

A Memorable Journey to Macedonia by Violetta (Bektesh) Armour
Call it Serendipity or fate but whatever it is, sometimes life has a way of coming full circle in a wonderful way. My recent trip to Macedonia and search for my ancestors was successful thanks to many chance encounters and to helpful people along the way. And Tempe Sister Cities played a big role in it all. I guess my story really begins over 90 years ago. My paternal grandparents, Spiro and Vaska Bektesh with their three sons, Peter, Dimitre and Milan (my father) immigrated to America from Prilep, Macedonia in 1921.
Tempe Delegates In Regensburg
Every year all the Tempe delegates upon their return think that the country they visit was by far the best and that their experience was the most impactful. I wish I could say that the eight delegates traveling to Germany are different, but in truth we too think our experience by far has to be the best. How could our summer get any better? Our adventures in Germany have been so diverse and exciting every day that there is no way to give it justice through explanation. On the first day of our arrival we were greeted by our smiling […]
Dawn Milovich Visits Beaulieu-sur-Mer on TSC Educator Exchange 2013
I had the privilege to be an educator exchange delegate this summer in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France. Daniel, Isabelle and Camille Hoessly were superb hosts and took me to places I would most likely never see as a tourist. My exchange with Isabelle was unique as it was the first for Beaulieu. I was able to visit schools in both France and Monaco since Isabelle is a Monegasque citizen and teaches in Monaco. Lucky for me, she teaches English! The French and Monegasque children were adorable. They all practiced their English skills with me and even proudly helped me with my French. […]
