The 40th anniversary celebrations which began in January 2011, are moving into high gear! The week of October 3-9, 2011 has been officially proclaimed Tempe Sister Cities Week by Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman. Tempe Sister Cities cordially invites you to participate!! See below a list of this weeks activities which include Bakery Day, Ring of Honor, Making a World of Difference, International Economic Forum, and our world famous Tempe Oktoberfest.
As Tempe Sister Cities celebrates its 40th Anniversary the Board of Directors has named twelve outstanding volunteers to be inducted into the Ring of Honor at ceremonies to be held at the Dick and Jane Neuheisel Sister City Garden located within Kiwanis Park.
Please join Tempe Sister Cities in Celebrating this year’s Ring of Honor Inductees on Wednesday, October 5th at 6pm with amazing performances from Zhengjiang, China. This years honorees include: Michael Curd, Debbie Duncan, Millie Wuger, Pat Hatton, Daniel and Isabelle Hoessly, Alice Goitia, Mary Larsen, Bill Pedersen, Jerry Pies, Chris Quigley, and Hans Schiedinger.
On October 5th and 6th, 2011, Tempe Sister Cities will host mayors, city council representatives and businesses from virtually all or our nine Sister Cities. The forum will continue TSC’s theme of bringing people together, but this time with a business focus.
Tempe Sister Cities Members are welcome to participate. Reservations are required for meals. Reservations must be received by Monday, October 4 and are limited. Payment can be made in advance for meals by clicking on the meal choices for each event below or payment can be made at the door. Barbara Barrett, former US Ambassador to Finland, has accepted the invitation to be the keynote speaker at the International Economic Forum. Barrett was Senior Advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, CEO of the American Management Association and has advised five American Presidents on trade, diplomacy and defense policy.
Oberburgermeister Hans Schaidinger has been a friend of Tempe Sister Cities for 16 years, hosting elaborate receptions for the delegations that visit Regensburg time and time again. He was honored as the Oktoberfest King, and this year he will tap the keg to begin Oktoberfest 2011.
Mayor Hallman has officially declared October 3-9th, 2011 as Tempe Sister Cities Week for Tempe, Arizona. This proclamation is in recognition of the 40 years of international outreach, including more than 750 student ambassadors from Tempe High Schools as well as hosting an equal number of international students.

Ten Years ago Rover third grade teacher, Deb Wakefield applied and was selected for an educator exchange to Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The connection with other teachers and her host family was a very special bond.
Twenty-five years ago, May of 1986, The Hackett House was restored and became the headquarters for Tempe Sister City Corporation. Each room of this historical building is a small museum honoring each of our sister cities. The patio hosts many events including The Chocolate Happy Hour and The International Mardi Gras, as well as other special events.
Thirty-two Tempe Sister City students are embarking on their unique adventures in one of our many sister cities this month. They will spend 5 weeks with their sister city brother or sister and return with them as part of their exchange. Sixty-four students from all over the world will be experiencing all that Tempe, Arizona and the southwest have to offer.
